Backup Management: Veeam File Restore Test

In this video, we highlight how to do a simple file restore for testing or quick recovery purposes in Veeam!

Step by Step:

  1. Today we’re going to do a quick video on how to go in and do a file restore test or do a quick file recovery in a Veeam backup let’s get into it.
  2. First thing you’re going to do is launch and open up your Veeam backup and replication console on the left you will go to your backups and you can do this from your local backup.
  3. Click disc, find your backup set, find the machine you wish to recover a file from right click, go to restore guest files and pick windows or Linux or other in this case it’s a Windows machine.
  4. You pick the restore point, you want to copy the files out of, give it a reason and hit browse.
  5. It’ll take it a minute but what it will do is it’ll load a backup recovery window and in here you can browse the recovery options files for recovery.
  6. So, give it a second now that it’s fully loaded you can browse your files.
  7. You can find the file in the folder you want to recover and you can right click and you have a couple different options.
  8. If you do restore it will put it back into the machine it was from automatically.
  9. If you’re not on the machine that it was you just want to copy it you want to just do a test restore so from your console system you can do copy to and you can pick a local folder.
  10. In this case we’ll put it on my desktop in a test restore folder hit okay and it’ll do a quick export and copy of that data to my local console here.
  11. Other options you can actually multi-select files so if you were in a folder with multiple files you can multi-select files  do the same thing copy to and those will go right there.
  12. There are some other options I’m not running as a local admin so you can reload your console and click that.
  13. You can also do some compare options especially good if you’re comparing multiple folders of stuff. You can also do restores to other locations.
  14. You can do some basic property uh information as well and you can even right click and go to explore and it’ll launch a window showing you where on the mounted backup that those files are. So from here you can even copy those same files and copy them out to your desktop and past them here.
  15. There you go pretty simple process but it’s convenient in case you don’t want to do a full virtualization test or you just want to make sure a file maybe a database file is recoverable in in a recent backup um very easy way to go in and grab a copy of a file from a recent backup.

When our NOC Manager left last fall we wanted to replace the position with an outsourced NOC to reduce headcount, and bring in an expert to both Labtech and our backup solutions.
