In this video, we look further into Policy objects, starting with the Working Directory settings.
Step by Step:
- We’ll be performing a deep dive into policy objects and how they can be configured to facilitate automation within your environment, in this video we will be discussing the working directory object.
- In our VSA Basics series we introduced you to the concept of policies and how objects in those policies can be configured to automate endpoint settings within the VSA. Those videos covered policy creation, few relations, assignments, and more if you need a refresher on this you can find those videos on our YouTube Channel.
- We’re going to start here with an empty policy I’ve created called working directory that’ll be applied to our Global org. As always we’re going to start with what our end goal is and work backwards.
- Something to note about policy objects is that they oftentimes perfectly mirror the VSA global settings available elsewhere in the environment. For this reason, we never want to change the global settings. Instead, we elect to create policies so that they are more flexible for certain groups and organizations.
- Our goal in this case is for all endpoints to use a standardized working directory branded with the company name. This directory is to be C colon backslash like and subscribe on Windows endpoints, forward slash Library forward slash like And subscribe on Mac, and forward slash TMP forward slash like And subscribe on Linux.
- So, let’s find that working directory object here it’s usually at the bottom of the page and enable this policy object now we could see here that we don’t have options for different OS versions here.
- To account for this we typically create three policies one for Mac, Linux, and Windows. We then use views to apply that policy only to the machines of the specified OS.
- You can see here that we’re looking at Windows machines only so we simply go down here and type C colon backslash like And subscribe and then we’re all set.
- We’ll then need to create two more policies one for Linux and one for Mac using the same principles but each looking at a view that targets that OS.
- All right so we figured these settings to our liking and now with as with all objects we want to save and apply and then move over to our organizations and machine groups to properly apply that’s covered in our VSA Basics policy videos as well.
