5 Skills MSP Owners Should Make Their 2026 New Year’s Resolution

TL;DR – Key Takeaways

  • Strategic leadership (not technical skills) is the biggest growth multiplier for MSPs in 2026.
  • Investing in AI, delegation, financial clarity, and team communication creates scalable, resilient MSPs.
  • You don’t need to master everything. Start with one leadership skill, schedule time for it, and measure your progress.

You didn’t start your MSP because you wanted to become a CEO navigating AI strategies, marketing funnels, and organizational development. You did it because you’re great at solving technical problems. But now, in 2026, the game has changed, and new skills are multipliers that determine how far your business goes.

At ProVal, we’ve supported many MSPs across many challenges. And the ones who thrive? It’s not about who knows the most about RMM scripting or patch policies. It’s about who has evolved into a strategic leader, someone who can see around the corner and lead with purpose.

Here are five practical, high-impact skills MSP executives should prioritize this year.

1. AI is a Strategic Advantage

AI is NOT just a buzzword, it’s a transformational tool. Yet many MSPs are treating it as optional, but it’s time to get on board.

Why this matters: AI can be a significant productivity-enhancer for how you triage tickets, generate proposals, maintain documentation, provide better service and many other aspects of your MSP… If you know how to use it.

Action Steps:

  • Block 2 hours weekly to test LLMs like ChatGPT and Copilot, or RPAs like Immybot and Rewst.
  • Attend 1 AI workshop built for IT service providers.
  • Identify 3 repetitive tasks in your MSP where AI can reduce effort (for example, documentation, reporting, or ticket handling) or enhance your business (for example, improving the way service is provided, enhancing team training, or adding new reporting insights for clients).

Lead with confidence and discernment. MSPs who embed AI into their operations will accelerate efficiency and elevate service delivery.

2. Delegate Like a Boss

Still managing your QBRs, social posts, or website content yourself? It’s costing you.

Why this matters: Your time is your biggest asset. If you’re still at the center of every task, congratulations! You’re the bottleneck.

Action Steps:

  • Run a one-week time audit. What are you still doing out of habit that someone else could own?
  • Document repeatable tasks (SOPs) and delegate them to someone else.
  • Adopt a “done is better than perfect” mindset. Scale requires letting go.

MSPs can’t scale without systems, structure, and support. Delegation is leadership in action.

3. Understand the Financial Story Behind Your Services

MRR is a metric. Margin is a strategy.

Why this matters: Many MSPs grow revenue without understanding the bottom-line reality. If you don’t know which clients or services are truly profitable, you can’t scale smart.

Action Steps:

  • Learn to read your P&L like a narrative. Where’s the money going, and why?
  • Calculate the hourly cost of service delivery by role.
  • Track time by client for one quarter to identify resource drains. Ask, “Who are profitable clients versus not?” and “What does the demographic of an ideal customer look like?”
  • Model out new service ideas before launching.

Profitability enables reinvestment in your people, your tools, and your future. Know your numbers and own your growth.

4. Develop a Habit of Continuous Learning

The pace of change isn’t slowing down. What you knew about cloud in 2025 is already aging.

Why this matters: Your real competition isn’t just other MSPs. It’s internal IT teams and evolving automation and tech. Staying curious is THE differentiator.

Action Steps:

  • Allocate a learning budget. However small, make it official.
  • Schedule weekly “learning hours” for yourself and your team.
  • Join a mastermind or peer group with leaders ahead of you.
  • Prioritize (at least) one major event or summit for live learning and networking.

MSPs that institutionalize learning stay ahead of threats and grab onto emerging opportunities faster.

5. Communicate Like a Visionary

If your team or clients don’t understand your vision, they can’t align with it.

Why this matters: Whether in-person or remote, clear and consistent communication fuels execution. Your job isn’t just solving problems. It’s telling the story of where your MSP is going and how everyone contributes.

Action Steps:

  • Set a communication rhythm. Use weekly huddles, monthly all-hands, and quarterly strategy shares.
  • Explain the why behind major decisions… Pricing, services, staffing.
  • Ask your team how you can improve your communication. Then actually listen.
  • Develop templated frameworks for client communication during crises or changes.

Leadership communication is a muscle. If you build it intentionally, your organization will execute with more clarity.

Make the Skills Stick in 2026

Here’s the truth. Most New Year’s resolutions fade by February. But not if you lead with intention.

  1. Start with one skill. (Hint: choose one you think will move the needle the most for your business.) Whether it’s AI, delegation, or education, go deep for Q1.
  2. Put it on the calendar. What gets scheduled gets done. Block learning, strategy time, and implementation.
  3. Find accountability. Whether it’s a peer group, coach, (or a partner like ProVal!) let someone hold you to your goals.
  4. Measure something. Whether it’s time reclaimed, margin increased, or SOPs completed, you gotta track it.

Give yourself grace. Some weeks will go off the rails. When it happens, just reset and keep going.

The Bottom Line

Running an MSP in 2026 is more complex than ever. You need to be more than a technician. You need to be a strategic operator.

Investing in your own leadership has the best ROI. Embrace a new mindset: lead strategically, delegate smartly, and build a resilient business.

So, what’s your leadership resolution this year? Pick one. Get to work. And if you need help freeing up the time to focus on it, that’s where we come in.

I truly view ProVal as a partner and extension of my team, not as one of my vendors

When our NOC Manager left last fall we wanted to replace the position with an outsourced NOC to reduce headcount, and bring in an expert to both Labtech and our backup solutions. Bringing in ProVal Technologies was one of the best decisions we made last year and has paid for itself.During our first few monthly recurring Labtech admin meetings the ProVal team discovered incorrect settings and policies that were not applying correctly in our Labtech server. Things that we thought were automated and working were not. For example, there were multiple scripts and policies running but set to do nothing such as disk cleanup scripts. Cisco Umbrella was not configured correctly. Server alerting was not set right and the list went on.The backup team sends daily and weekly reports and updates that reduce my technicians time that we used to spend on backup or antivirus tickets that took forever and were tedious.ProVal also brings in great insights to our business and really cares about our success. They will frequently mention to me in meetings what new scripts they can import to make us more efficient or will schedule upgrades to our backups, Labtech, etc so I don’t have to worry. I truly view ProVal as a partner and extension of my team not as one of my vendors.

They will quickly become an extension of your team and your ROI will reflect the results

We have been a long time user of Labtech and had tried for many years to manage the product internally with no real success at the level we needed to make our solutions more efficient for our customers. Once we hired Vikram and his team at ProVal, it solved all our pain points with the product and we really felt like we were leveraging the tool as it was designed. If this sounds like you and it’s keeping you up at night, then you need these guys. They will quickly become an extension of your team and your ROI will reflect the results.

They work well, fast and on budget

We met Vikram from ProVal Tech at Gary Pica’s Shnizzfest a year ago. Vikram explained the advantage of having trained, certified personnel take care of our recent Automate implementation. Even though we had taken an implementation package from ConnectWise to start up the program, we felt many custom configurations we needed for our business were lacking. We hired ProVal Tech after Automate was installed to help us with this task. From sales to technicians everyone was professional and knowledgeable. Onboarding was simple, and well documented. Tools on the web were supplied while we did the work, and they allowed us to track what was done, and see the improvements in the environment. It was easy to reach any of the team members, for any concern or question – all answered with courtesy and smile. Once the work was finished, we were given some training and explanations, add to that documentation, about the work and the scripts and features added to the program. We have been happily working with Automate since then. We can only recommend this efficient team of people for any work into Automate: they work well, fast and on budget.
