An active directory is a directory structure used on Microsoft Windows based computers and servers to store information and data about networks and domains. It keeps track of all the user accounts and passwords, logical user and organization groups, security policies, peripheral devices like shared printers and storage, and secures access control for the entire organization. Active Directory is a part of the Windows Server platform, and is a central and core part of an organization’s network and server infrastructure.
Active Directory is subdivided into one or more domains. A domain is a security boundary. Each domain is hosted by a server computer called a domain controller (DC). A domain controller manages all of the user accounts and passwords for a domain.
